Hi Fred,
This is a wonderful site, full of information.
I was 10 in 1962 and I remember HMCS Bonaventure in the Shannon Estuary and the helicopters
flying overhead taking the survivors and casualties to Shannon Airport. I live at Bromore Cliffs ,Ballybunion, Co Kerry. Some months later my brother Danny and I found a survival kit under the cliffs at Bromore.I believe this was one of many dropped by a Shackleton to you and the other survivors. We gave it to the Gardai and they returned it to us over a year later. The only surviving item of it now is a plastic still for making fresh water from seawater.
I was one of the founders of Ballybunion Sea & Cliff Rescue in 1986 ,now I am Chief Coxswain
and a cliff rescue instructor with the Irish Coastguard,
Yours sincerely,
Mike Flahive
